I learned to paint in watercolour in the workshops of the Agrupación Vasca de Acuarelistas and the engraving teacher, Maite Arenaza, taught me the secrets of this technique in her Múltiple workshop in Bilbao. These have been my two formative pillars, which have given me the formulas to develop my painting and many of my works are a symbiosis of both worlds.
I have evolved towards abstract themes, combining watercolour with engraving and collage. I love to face a blank piece of paper and let the watercolour look for its own paths, starting from a generic idea that is transformed through the dialogue established between the paper and the watercolour pigment with different degrees of water, always pursuing the light, trying to create atmospheres and subtle transparencies.
This path, so random in the process, is a challenge and the compensation is extraordinary when the work has an interesting ending.
In 2019 I took on the presidency of the AVA, another challenge, in this case in the field of management, trying to ensure that the Basque Association of Watercolourists, with 77 years of uninterrupted work, continues to be a tool for training in the watercolour technique and an instrument for disseminating the work of the artists who make it up, trying to make the Association a reference in the world of watercolour.
In September we will be holding the Bilbao 2022 International Watercolour Symposium organised by the Association and much of my energy for many months now has been focused on making it a successful meeting point for watercolourists from all over Europe.
